The Civil Rights Memorial Center will offer free admission on Nelson Mandela’s birthday on Thursday, which is an international day of celebration.

The Civil Rights Memorial Center, which sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center, will screen the documentary “Nelson Mandela: Journey to Freedom” at noon on July 18, the center released.

The screening will be followed by a presentation by Georgette Norman, director of the Rosa Parks Library and Museum. Norman will examine the decades Mandela has spent serving his country and the world.

Nelson Mandela Day is an international celebration of his life and call to action for people to change the world for the better. The former South African president, who turns 95 Thursday, has been hospitalized since June for a recurring lung infection.

Mandela, a leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, was imprisoned for 27 years when the nation was under white racist rule. In 1990, he was released from prison amid worldwide protests and civil strife within the country. He became South Africa’s first black president, winning election in the country’s first fully representative, multiracial election. As president from 1994 to 1999, Mandela focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by addressing institutionalized racism and poverty, and by promoting racial reconciliation.
