SPLC statement on court's blocking of Trump transgender military ban
We applaud the federal court’s decision to bar President Trump from changing the government policy that allows transgender people to serve in the military.
Thousands of transgender Americans have served – and are serving – this country with honor and courage in the military. While these brave Americans risk their lives, President Trump’s disgraceful, hateful and discriminatory attempt to change this policy – backed by the country’s most extreme anti-LGBT hate groups – would do nothing to make our nation or those defending it safer.
As today’s federal court decision affirms, President Trump cannot enforce bigotry by singlehandedly discharging people from military service because they are transgender.
We continue to stand with all transgender and gender-nonconforming Americans – whether civilian or military – in the march toward dignity and equality for everyone in our nation.
