SPLC statement on Trump administration’s efforts to remove civil rights protections from transgender Americans

The Trump administration has apparently redoubled its efforts to exclude transgender Americans from the protection of federal civil rights laws.

The existence of transgender people is not up for debate. This administration – based on news reports over the weekend in The New York Times – seems to think it can write transgender people out of existence by issuing regulations declaring that sex is determined at birth and cannot be changed.

But the leaders of this administration should take note: The SPLC is watching closely.

We are paying attention to the administration’s connections to outside groups such as the Alliance Defending Freedom, a hate group that seeks to undermine the rights and the dignity of transgender people and to push them back into the shadows.

These groups fail to remember, however, that dozens of courts have fully affirmed the rights and identities of transgender people over the past two decades.

The SPLC will continue to resist hateful policies, and we will continue to stand up for the rights of the transgender community.
