A Path Forward for Alabama's Prison System

 

 

Alabama’s prison system is in crisis. Prisons are unacceptably overcrowded, facilities are ill-equipped, inadequate, and severely understaffed, violence is rampant, and health care falls far short of constitutional guarantees.

The U.S. Department of Justice agreed, releasing on April 3, 2019, an unprecedented findings letter on the Alabama prison system detailing a staggering level of violence and abuse, and a basic disregard for human dignity.
