SPLC Condemns Deadly Attack on Islamic Center of San Diego

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) unequivocally condemns yesterday’s targeted attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego, which resulted in the deaths of multiple people. According to reports from law enforcement authorities, the suspects engaged in “generalized hate rhetoric,” and the shooting is now being investigated as a hate crime.

“While far too many people overlook, ignore or dismiss hateful rhetoric as ‘just words,’ yesterday’s appalling incident showcases why hate and white supremacy must be rooted out,” said Bryan Fair, interim president and CEO, SPLC. “Rhetoric can easily escalate to violence that leads to unnecessary tragedy. In fact, the SPLC has documented the appalling rise in anti-Muslim bigotry over the last year. The warning signs were there, and we must address this harmful trend.

“The SPLC is deeply saddened for the victims, their families and the entire Muslim community in San Diego, who should be able to live free from the fear of being targeted for their religion, ethnicity or race,” Fair said. “We stand against Islamophobia and hate directed at all religious groups and will continue to work with communities across this country to pursue a future where everyone can worship in peace.”
