SPLC Mourns the Loss of LGBTQ+ Advocate Congressman Barney Frank

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) mourns the loss of former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, who served Massachusetts in elected office for 32 years. Frank was one of the first openly gay members of Congress and dedicated his life to advancing LGBTQ+ rights. He was 86.

“Today, we reflect on the extraordinary legacy of Barney Frank. As one of the first openly gay members of Congress, Rep. Frank helped break barriers in American politics,” said Bryan Fair, interim president and CEO, SPLC. “Frank’s marriage while serving in Congress marked a historic milestone for LGBTQ+ representation and reflected his impact on expanding visibility, inclusion and opportunity in public life. Through his leadership and authenticity, he inspired future generations to serve and live openly and proudly.”

Frank’s influence extended far beyond legislation, as he helped shape national conversations around fairness and democratic values. Before entering public office, he participated in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer civil rights campaign. During his time in Congress, he championed affordable housing and stronger consumer protections, such as efforts to curb abusive lending practices. Frank also played a key role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, including supporting the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and advocating for broader anti-discrimination protections.

“As a fierce advocate for equality and accountability, Congressman Frank’s record was defined by an enduring commitment to all Americans. We extend our deepest thoughts to his loved ones and all who were influenced by his unwavering dedication to public service,” Fair concluded.
