SPLC Action Fund Statement Ahead of the Senate Judiciary Committee Vote on Judge Amy Coney Barrett

WASHINGTON — SPLC Action Fund President and CEO Margaret Huang released the below statement ahead of the Senate Judiciary Committee vote to approve the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court and recommend confirmation on the Senate floor:

“It is outrageous that 12 days before the general election Senate Republicans are single-mindedly ramming through a nominee to a lifetime-tenured seat on the Supreme Court. This is nothing less than a power grab that ignores the desperate needs of millions of American families who are being financially devastated during the pandemic.

“Having Judge Barrett on the Court would have seismic consequences – putting millions in peril of losing access to health care and equal justice, threatening the rights of communities of color, LGBTQ people, women and religious minorities under the guise of religious freedom and jeopardizing safeguards for immigrant communities and lower-income Americans. In fact, many of these critical issues will come before this Court during its current term.

“We urge the Senate to reject this nomination.”
