SPLC Condemns Budget Bill Passed by House Republicans

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center condemns the reconciliation bill passed by House Republicans early this morning as a reckless and dangerous proposal that would push millions of people in America deeper into hunger, illness and poverty. While families across the nation struggle to make ends meet, this so-called “big, beautiful bill” makes devastating cuts to essential services, all to fund tax breaks for large corporations and the ultra-wealthy.

“It is deeply troubling to watch so many in the country applaud a bill that so blatantly abandons struggling families and accelerates the growing inequality in America,” said Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center. “While the bill showers billionaires and corporations with money and pumps funding into brutal immigration enforcement, it takes life-saving health care, food assistance and educational opportunities away from those who need it most.

“The bill also targets, with ruthless precision, immigrants and the children of immigrants who are lawfully in this country,” Huang continued. “We cannot turn away from this cruelty — especially now, as the Trump administration escalates its unconstitutional and inhumane attacks on immigrants and refugees. As the bill makes its way to the Senate, we call on all senators to put political showmanship aside and show up for people across America in their time of need. Senators must fight for a federal budget that funds vital programs and services, like those that put food on the table for hungry children and gives people the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families with dignity.”
