MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) denounces the actions of Mississippi and Louisiana governors, Tate Reeves and Jeff Landry respectively, in aiding the costly and arbitrary Trump administration takeover of Washington, D.C. by deploying additional National Guard servicemembers.
“The latest deployment of Mississippi and Louisiana National Guard further shows the lengths the Trump administration is willing to take to control, criminalize, intimidate and disempower the American people. For decades, Black, Brown, and unhoused communities have been under siege, abused and unfairly maligned by the administration’s abuse of power and cruel authoritarianism,” said Derwyn Bunton, chief legal officer, SPLC. “Reeves and Landry are the latest Republican governors to enable this president’s PR stunt rather than ensuring the troops can support the citizens of Louisiana and Mississippi. As a diverse nation, we cannot sit still as every institution comes under attack and the rights of underrepresented people are slowly stripped away. SPLC will continue to monitor the efforts of these governors and the ongoing situation in Washington, DC.”
