MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Southern Poverty Law Center condemns the passage of the so-called “big, beautiful bill” by House and Senate Republicans. This budget is a reckless and dangerous bill that would push millions of people in America deeper into hunger, illness and poverty. While families across the nation struggle to make ends meet, this bill makes devastating cuts to essential services, all to fund tax breaks for large corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
“The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) strongly condemns the passage of the Republican-led budget bill. This deeply immoral legislation prioritizes corporate profits and tax breaks for the wealthy over programs that benefit those in need,” said Margaret Huang, president and CEO of SPLC. “It is disheartening that elected officials in Congress rushed to approve a sprawling budget exceeding 900 pages without transparency and with little consideration for our country’s most vulnerable populations—seniors, children, and low-income families.
“It is unconscionable to see elected officials celebrate a budget that strips people of essential health care, takes food from hungry families and inflicts unnecessary suffering to enrich millionaires,” Huang continued. “This unethical budget also robs those with the least in order to expand a punitive immigration detention system and will result in lost lives as a direct consequence.”
