Montgomery, Ala – The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) denounces the actions of deploying the National Guard and taking over the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department by the Trump administration.
“The Southern Poverty Law Center joins its partners, allies, and supporters in condemning the Trump administration’s deployment of the National Guard in D.C., as well as the federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department. This is the latest example of the administration’s ongoing abuses of power and racial profiling, targeting Black and Brown communities, the poor, and the unhoused,” said interim president and CEO of the SPLC Bryan Fair.
“It is not a crime to be Black or Brown, poor, or unhoused, and the Constitution guarantees every person in this country a presumption of innocence, due process, and equal justice under law. We need competent leadership and real solutions to discrimination and poverty, not authoritarian abuses of power and distractions from the dismantling of the federal government and our democracy. The SPLC is continuing to fight for a multiracial, inclusive democracy in which we can all live and thrive.”
