SPLC Statement on House Approval of Senate Supplemental Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Southern Poverty Law Center Deputy Legal Director Mary Bauer, who oversees the SPLC’s Immigrant Justice Project, issued the following statement on the House approval of the Senate’s border supplemental bill:

“The humanitarian crisis at our southern border is a direct result of the Trump administration’s policies – which have created unbridled chaos and suffering.

“It is deeply disappointing that Congress would approve additional funding without strict controls to prevent the expansion of the egregious enforcement policies that created this crisis.

“This additional funding will further embolden this administration to implement draconian tactics. It will now be more essential than ever that Congress drastically expand its oversight of the administration and these federal agencies. With tragedy after tragedy unfolding day after day, there is no time to spare.”
