SPLC: Trump’s Reckless Border Trip Must Be Cancelled

ALAMO, Texas – In response to the president’s planned visit to the border on Tuesday, Efrén Olivares, deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice Project, released the following statement.

“For years, communities on the border have resisted this administration’s bigoted agenda. It’s these communities, from San Diego to Brownsville, who have been subjected to unconscionable violence inflamed by the president’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and xenophobic policies.

“Rather than addressing his own culpability in the insurrection at our nation's Capitol last week, Trump is seeking to divert attention by heading to the symbolic seat of his racist immigration agenda.

“The violence Trump incited last week, and the violence his anti-immigrant policies cause stem from the alarming mainstreaming of white nationalist ideology that our country must reckon with and fight to uproot.

“The president’s planned trip to the border will only further the harm and beget more violence. It must be cancelled.”
