MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) condemns the Trump administration’s proposed directive to attack, malign and cut federal funding to every public housing authority in the country that actively protects immigrants.
The Trump administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is demanding public housing authorities report the citizenship status of tenants within 30 days as part of an effort to bolster the administration’s dangerous immigration policies and further criminalize Black and Brown immigrant families.
“The latest attack on immigrant families proves the Trump administration is not concerned with justice or fairness. It is only concerned with cruelty, malice and harm,” said Kirsten Anderson, deputy legal director, SPLC. “By singling out immigrant families, the administration is carrying out a policy rooted in white supremacist propaganda in order to reclaim aspects of the nation from supposed ‘invaders.’ The proposed cuts will have adverse repercussions that affect all who depend on public housing. We must rally behind immigrant families to dispel the myths perpetuated by the administration and ensure the safety of those seeking to pursue a new life in this nation.”
