What does the executive order do?
On Jan. 20, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order titled Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety, which falsely claims that the death penalty is necessary to deter violent, lethal crimes. It specifically calls for the Attorney General (AG) to seek the death penalty for every federal crime when a law enforcement officer was murdered, or when the person alleged to have committed a capital offense is an immigrant without lawful status. The order encourages states to do the same. It also instructs the AG to ensure that states have a sufficient supply of drugs used to carry out lethal injections.
Why is the use of the death penalty a bad policy decision?
The SPLC will use every tool at our disposal to continue advocating for an end to the death penalty — an inhumane and racially biased practice — including urging Congress to abolish capital punishment for federal crimes by passing the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act. Together we fight!
