Potentially violent hate and extremist groups in the U.S. are at record levels; racism, anti-LGBT hate, religious bigotry, anti-immigrant sentiment and associated hate crimes are serious societal problems that creep into our political discourse.
Driven by resentment over the changing racial demographics of the country, frustration over the government’s handling of the economy, and the mainstreaming of demonizing propaganda aimed at various minorities, hate groups increased their numbers again in 2012 to 1,007.
Hate group leaders are exploiting the difficult economic times to swell their ranks, and their anti-Semitic, white supremacist propaganda is promoting violence. A neo-Nazi leader was quoted in USA Today saying, "When the economy suffers, people are looking for answers. ...We are the answer for white people."
As the ranks of hate swell, people of goodwill must stand up and be counted. Please add yourself to our interactive map as a voice for tolerance — and find out which hate groups are active in your area.

SPLC Tracks 1007 Hate Groups in the U.S.
As the massacre at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin illustrates, the threat of domestic terrorism from far-right extremists poses a very real danger to our communities. And, with four more years under an African-American president — the radical right is growing more desperate by the day. The Southern Poverty Law Center is the country’s most effective nonprofit organization fighting dangerous extremist groups. We’ve documented a staggering 1,007 hate groups operating in our country — a nearly 70% increase since 2000.
