Christopher Cantwell faces bond hearing next week under shadow of recent intoxication arrest
“Crying Nazi” Christopher Cantwell has a bond hearing on April 24 for charges related to Charlottesville, but a recent arrest in another Virginia county may have an impact on the outcome.
On March 31, Cantwell was arrested by police in Loudoun County and charged with public swearing and intoxication, before being released on his own recognizance. Next week, he faces a bond hearing in Albemarle County evaluating his current bond, now set at $25,000, on charges of using an illegal tear gas during last year’s infamous Tiki Torch march in Charlottesville, Virginia.
His intoxication charge, which may affect his bond status, is just the latest in a string of incidents where Cantwell has appeared to be his own worst enemy. His woes began in Charlottesville, where he appeared in a viral VICE documentary, and his conduct ensured his name was synonymous with ugly racism for viewers around the world. Shortly after, upon learning of his criminal charges, he posted a tearful video that earned him the moniker “Crying Nazi.” And just last month, he found himself in hot water with other members of the racist “alt-right” after he revealed he was talking with FBI .
In Charlottesville, he was charged with three felony counts related to an incident with pepper spray, but two of those were dropped late last year. He goes to trial on his sole remaining felony charge, malicious illegal use of gas, on August 13.
