These incidents include only a fraction of the approximately 260,000 reported and unreported hate crimes that a 2013 government study estimated occur annually.

    Sebastian Espinosa-Carranza, 18, was charged with property damage to a religious institution, defacement of religious property and malicious destruction of property worth over $1,000 for allegedly vandalizing a synagogue's walls, windows and doors with swastikas, “KKK”, and other hate-based graffiti.

    Eric Reece Wiethorn, 49, was charged with first-degree harassment for sending hate mail containing a suspicious powder and slurs directed at members of the LGBT community to a gay bar in late March.

    Thomas Jordan Driver, 25; David Elliot Moran, 47; and Charles Thomas Newcomb, 42, all of whom were members of the Traditional American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, were arrested in an alleged conspiracy to kill a former black inmate. All of the men were either current or former employees of the Florida Department of Corrections.

    Chaka Castro, aka Catina Dennings, 39; Juan Olaya, 34; Octavius Scott, 22; Johnisha Williams, 19; Justin Johnson, 25; and Jakeyra Augustus, 21, were charged with robbery, burglary and conspiracy to commit bias intimidation for selecting five Indian-American families to hold at gunpoint while their homes were ransacked between Oct. 20 and Nov. 29.
